"Look Me Over" - Joe Biden's 2020 Primary Redemption
Democratic presidential candidate and former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. paraphrased the line time and again throughout his 2020 campaign.
"Look me over. If you like what you see, help me out. If not, vote for the other person, but give me a look."
Caucus-goers in Iowa did just that and awarded him fourth place. The campaign immediately began to lower expectations for the next contest. Biden continued to ask voters to consider him in the following days, but by February 11, the day of the New Hampshire primary, he was thanking supporters and moving on. He skipped his scheduled primary night party to fly to South Carolina, where he held an evening rally as New Hampshire results rolled in. He placed fifth.
It would be the lowest point of his campaign. But redemption was around the corner. Within two weeks, Biden was riding high atop his lead in South Carolina.
"Look me over."
He finished first with almost 50 percent of the vote. Over the next few days, endorsements from former opponents streamed in, including an in-person endorsement from Pete Buttigieg. The consolidated support was a turning point in the nomination fight. Biden's best days were upon him. On Super Tuesday, he won 10 states and cemented his delegate count lead over his remaining rivals.
